MY SORORITY
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated
My sorority was for me. It is not for everyone. I do not mean to disrespect when I say, not everyone is meant to be a Sigma. In the South, you have to know your worth and believe that you are whom you are without hearing everyone clamouring for your thoughts, ideas.
I met Sigma in late Fall 1987 at Illinois State University. The young women at Gamma Rho chapter were self-confident, personable, and pRHOud. Though I did not finish my pledging at GP, it was my formative years that kept me until I met the women of Eta Kappa (HK) at Stillman College and the sisters of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. I fell in love with the special sisterhood.
Sigma women come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and creeds. We believe in the foundations set before us by our famous founders, our seven Pearls: Mary Lou Allison Gardner-Little, Hattie Dunlin Redford, Nannie Mae G. Johnson, Cubena McClure, Vivian Marbury, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, and Bessie Martin.
Sigma Gamma Rho in the South has won 6 years in a row the step championship. I am priviledged to be a member and it is my goal to be a prhoud and classy member of Sigma.
I am pleased to have been honored by my sisters in recognizing my art for the sorority: (Poems) Legend and Bequeathing a Lady. Both poems have been placed in our national magazine. I have been recognized and honored by my sisters for them. I am appreciative that my thoughts and ideas are important to theirs are to me.
I am pleased that my daughter, Whitney Ashante', is following me on her journey of Sigma. She will make her choices and I will support them. It is her right to choose Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated or any other of the Panhellenic sororities.
Whitney has won the Southeastern Regional Rhoer's pageant. I am excited for her. She is happy that Sigma gets her. I think that is IT. Sigma Gamma Rho sorhors accept its sisters for who they are.
We are human and we will succeed and fail, but as sisters we strive to applaud and admonish each other with love. Sigma Stick together, Win together, lose together and live and die (one day) together.
