(This is approximation from my cousin in Chicago, with my edits)
Grand Rose (Griffin or Griffith) – born 1831 - 1910
Arrived from the West Coast of Africa to one of many possible undetermined ports in Virginia where she was auctioned into slavery. She was first sold to a West Virginia plantation owner. She was subsequently sold soon again because she was stubborn, proud, and refused to work in the fields. Rumor is that she was not killed for this conduct because she was a high ranking African queen, princess or heiress. Her second owner was a farmer named Griffin or Griffith from Union Town, Alabama. She had 2 children, a son named West Griffin or Griffith and Georgianna Griffin or Griffith born approximately 1860. We are not certain where she had the children.
George Washington (Linnear, Lanier, Linear, or Linnard) – born between 1830 -1840
(Note: Linnard spelling is based off 1900 census data)
George was born into slavery and sold several times. He was a house slave. His responsibility was to care for the farm business, such as inventory and daily management. It is said that the slave owner permitted George to learn to read a little. He may have been self taught because he had exceptional skills for sounds and language. Therefore, along the way he managed to read. He could speak 2 additional languages, we are not certain, but one was probably Native American. He acted as the preacher and educator of the various slave community areas he lived. George and ‘Dot’ Mother had 2 children, Myra and Gilbert (1858). George had 9 other sons in addition to Gilbert.
Gilbert and his 9 brothers were scatted throughout Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana, after the Emancipation Proclamation (1863) because they were involved in the beating of a white man. The parents might have dispensed their boys for fear of death. Some of the brothers were killed after the incident. We are not certain the dates and which brothers. Gilbert was a shoemaker. His known surviving siblings are as follows, according to 1900 census:
Myra (Linnear, Lanier, Linear, or Linnard) had 8 children. Her only known offspring was her youngest child, Jim Sanders who died in 1993 in Hollingdale, Mississippi.
